Crab-eating behaviour of mangabeys reported

Les parcs côtiers du Gabon protègent les derniers refuges du Mangabey couronné ou Cercocèbe à collier, Cercocebus torquatus, qui est menacé par la chasse et la perte de son habitat. Les Mangabeys ont un régime alimentaire flexible et à Loango ils sont réputés pour manger les crabes. Des observations de ce comportement alimentaire ont maintenant été publiées dans une courte communication d’African Journal of Ecology.

Gabon's coastal parks protect the last strongholds of the red-capped mangabey, Cercocebus torquatus, threatened from hunting and habitat loss. Mangabeys have flexible diets and in Loango they are known to eat crabs. Observations of this feeding behaviour has now been published in a short note in the African Journal of Ecology.

  Length-weight relationships of 13 fish species from Akanda National Park in Gabon, Central Africa English This study provides the length-weight relationships (LWRs) for 13 fish species belonging to 10 families. Samples were collected in the mangrove area of Akanda National Park (ANP) in Gabon between May 2017 and March 2018 with fishing trammel gillnets (15 m long and 1.10 m high, 100 mm large mesh outer layers, and one 10, 27, and 40 mm small mesh each net). Fish total length and total weight were measured, with the precision of 1 mm and 1 g, respectively. The LWRs parameters for the 13 fish species had not yet been reported in FishBase for Central Africa. Real-time alerts from AI-enabled camera traps using the Iridium satellite network : A case-study in Gabon, Central Africa.

  English Gabon, a Central African country, has long proven to be a fruitful testing ground for camera trap technology. The wealth of data generated means that there are large datasets from various projects. In this study, they built the real-time alert system by modifying standard camera traps (Bushnell™) ready to use. The system uses communication through the Iridium satellite network, it works even in remote areas without a telephone signal or without reliable Wi-Fi. The results show that the alert system can work for at least 3 months in the absence of humans when capturing a median of 17.23 images per day. The median time difference between taking images and receiving an alert was about 7,35 min, although some outliers showed delays of 5 days or more when the system was incorrectly installed initially and unable to connect to the Iridium satellite network.
