New genetic study on leatherback turtle populations

New genetic analyses of leatherback turtle rookeries from both sides of the atlantic has been published, examining population structure and differentiation using microsatellite and mitochondrial markers.
Nine different nesting populations were studied, including Gabon and Ghana from West Africa. Sufficient genetic differentiation was observed for the authors to conclude that all nine nesting colonies should be considered as demographically independent populations for conservation.
